In a rare scene of lighthearted joy, children from the war-torn Dvorichna community gathered at the Chervona Kalyna Kharkiv Foundation on Wednesday for a day that promised — and delivered — a break from hardship. Organizers transformed the foundation’s space into a haven for young refugees and their families, thanks in large part to the generous support of Food Bank Ukraine.
The event began with children’s laughter, as they participated in organized team games led by a professional animator. Bright faces lit up the playground as boys and girls competed in friendly matches, shared in giggles, and enjoyed the momentary release from the burdens of displacement. Volunteers from the foundation, many of whom have their own families affected by the ongoing conflict, watched on, visibly moved by the children’s happiness.
After the games, a long table spread with festive food awaited the children and their parents. Prepared by the foundation’s Kitchen of Kindness, the offerings included a variety of treats: warm pastries, pizza, sausage rolls, and freshly made compote. For the children, it was more than just a meal — it was a taste of normalcy. In such difficult times, even a simple shared meal can become a symbol of community and resilience.
