In Kharkiv, a Volunteer Force Delivers Relief — and Hope

As spring thawed the frozen streets of eastern Ukraine, one thing remained steadfast: the compassion and daily resolve of the Chervona Kalyna Kharkiv Charitable Foundation. April marked another month of unwavering support to displaced families, wartime volunteers, and civil society under pressure — reaffirming that, even in war, humanity can blossom.

A Medal for Every Heart

On April 28, at a formal ceremony hosted by the Kharkiv Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration honored Ukraine’s most dedicated volunteer organizations. Among them, Chervona Kalyna Kharkiv stood tall — awarded a Certificate of Honor for their tireless service since the onset of the full-scale invasion.

But the accolades didn’t stop there. Several foundation members were individually recognized:

  • Lyudmyla Katkova, Foundation Director, received the prestigious “Volunteer of Ukraine” medal.

  • Volunteers including Oksana Shylo, Varvara Volobueva, Iryna Fesenko, Oleksandra Melnychenko, and Olena Fytilieva were awarded the “Honor and Glory” Cross.

“These awards are not just medals — they are symbols of resilience, unity, and the power of ordinary people doing extraordinary work,” Katkova said.

Delivering Aid, Empowering People

April also brought tangible relief to communities across Kharkiv Oblast. With logistical support from the Kharkiv Regional Employment Center, the foundation:

  • Distributed over 10 tons of humanitarian aid

  • Engaged internally displaced persons (IDPs) in community service

  • Strengthened coordination between local governments and grassroots efforts

Whether in Dvorichna, Oliashany, or Kharkiv’s frontline neighborhoods, food parcels and personal care kits made their way into the hands of those who needed them most.

Supporting Those Who Give Life

On April 1, the foundation joined the Kharkiv District Military Administration in honoring blood donors in the village of Oliashany. Volunteers provided hot tea and pastries from the “Kitchen of Kindness”, showing appreciation for everyday heroes saving lives behind the scenes.

“Giving blood is a quiet act of courage,” said one volunteer. “We’re here to say, ‘Thank you.’”

Partnerships That Power the Mission

None of this would be possible without steadfast partners. The foundation extended deep gratitude to:

  • Nova Poshta Humanitarian, for seamless delivery of critical aid

  • Kharkiv Regional Employment Center, for logistical and staffing support

  • Local administrations and volunteers, for operational coordination

A Symbol of Unity in Wartime Ukraine

In every village road and city alley where the Chervona Kalyna Kharkiv team operates, their work echoes a powerful message: Ukraine is not alone. Every package delivered, every child comforted, and every volunteer honored reinforces this mission.

In a time of destruction, they are building bridges of care.
