A Tradition of Care and Unity
On November 24, the “Chervona Kalyna Kharkiv” Charitable Foundation hosted a special meal at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Kharkiv. The event, held on Taras Shevchenko Street, was more than just a charitable gesture — it was a profound act of unity, care, and faith. Coinciding with the eve of the 40-day Christmas Lent, this gathering highlighted the power of tradition and community in helping those in need.
More Than a Meal: Nourishment for the Body and Soul
In Christian tradition, a shared meal often extends the sacredness of worship. On this day, the gathering began with a blessing from Father Valentin, the church’s pastor, emphasizing that the pre-lenten feast was not just about food but about sharing love, kindness, and support.
Volunteers from the foundation’s “Kitchen of Kindness” served up steaming bowls of hearty porridge with meat, fresh pies stuffed with cabbage and potatoes, and cups of hot tea. Each dish was prepared with care, turning a simple meal into a powerful symbol of warmth and compassion.
Honoring Century-Old Traditions
The day carried special significance as it marked Zagovienie, the traditional feast before the beginning of the fast. For centuries, this day has been an opportunity for communities to gather, support each other, and reflect on their shared values. The foundation’s commitment to preserving and celebrating these traditions reminds us all of the importance of togetherness, especially in challenging times.
A Community Effort Rooted in Generosity
This event was made possible by the tireless efforts of both the foundation and Father Valentin, who spearheaded a prior initiative to collect essential supplies. Thanks to the generosity of parishioners, potatoes, cabbage, and beets were donated to support meals for displaced families. These acts of kindness demonstrate how even the simplest contributions can create a ripple effect of goodness.
A Sacred Space for Connection and Hope
As the church opened its doors to those in need, it became a space not only for nourishment but also for healing and hope. Guests shared stories, connected with one another, and prayed for peace. For many, the warmth of the gathering offered a much-needed reminder that they are not alone.
Our Gratitude to Those Who Made It Possible
The foundation extends heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to the success of this event:
- Father Valentin: for his hospitality, spiritual guidance, and dedication to community service.
- The Volunteers of the Kitchen of Kindness: for their tireless efforts in preparing meals that nourish both body and soul.
- Generous Donors and Parishioners: for their contributions of food and resources that made this feast possible.
